POTENTIAL ESSAY SUBJECT: BREASTFEEDING IN PUBLIC

This video of a "social" experiment about breastfeeding in public is fake but shows what happens in society in an extreme manner. Blowing it out of proportion just shows how ridiculous it is. I'm interested in the phenomenon of breastfeeding in public and if it is or isn't a big deal in our western culture.

I watched the video Carmen Winant: Birth and its Metaphors again on my own so I could take my time to focus on it. The video made me emotional, the act of giving birth is something so grant and amazing and to watch it so upclose for the first time was overwhelming. It made me proud of all women including my mom, I would like to investigate the subject more in the future because I haven't seen this topic come back a lot in art/literature/movies etc. It gave me a new appreciation for my mom. Birth is a beautiful thing and Carmen did a great job of capturing that.

POTENTIAL ESSAY SUBJECT:

I watched Paris Is Burning before and I loved it, I had a period where I was fascinated by the ballroom and drag scene so this was a staple to watch. I already had watched the two seasons of Pose aswell so that made understanding the subjects spoken about in class easier.

A friend of mine, Jimmy, is part of the Kiki House Of Angels, part of the Rotterdam and international ballroom scene. In class I had to think about this documentary about the "father" of the house, Typhoon Angels.

To be fair, I didn't know a lot of queer artists before and the art canon doesn't really represent them. I'm sure our art history contains of a lot of queer artists and these ones treated in class sure could write a new one.

African American photographer, Moneta Sleet Jr. is best known for being a popular staff photographer for Ebony Magazine. Sleet's work focused on the beauty and struggle of being black in America. Sleet became the first African-American man to win the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography.

My favorite musical Hair mainly covers the topic of the Vietnam war and hippies in the 70's, but also rascism in the 70's, these songs were composed for the musical and later mashed up/covered by Nina Simone

My interest in children and their creative development is something I’ve been developing since the start of my major in art education at this academy. Before this major, at my previous school, I had a lot of friends in the gay and drag/vogue scene and my interest in this topic was also very prominent. I was always fascinated by gender roles and how they can be bended. For this essay I want to combine my two interests of gender roles and how they can be bended and the creative development of children. One could say that these topics don’t relate to each other at all, but to my insights they actually do.
